Israel Ordered to Pay $400,000 to Aramin Family for Girl’s Murder
by Richard Silverstein
Abir Aramin memorial (Activestills)
Abir Aramin memorial (Activestills)
How much is a ten year-old Palestinian girl worth? If you’re the Israeli government or police, nothing. If you’re Bassam Aramin, her father, her worth is beyond measure. If you’re an Israeli court, you might, Solomon-like, split the baby and the difference, as the Jerusalem District Court did when it awarded Aramin over $400,000 over the negligent death of his precious daughter, Abir, at the hands of a Border Policeman.
So far so decent. But the crime here, aside from the original killing of this girl, was that the very same court, after finding that she was killed in an act of negligence and by a police officer who fired in violation of proper procedures, refused to hold the killer liable for his act. more on tikkunolam>>
Rosh Hashanah 5772: Hope and the Social Justice Movement
By Carlo Strenger
The Jewish year 5771 brought two diametrically opposed developments in Israel. One was the flood of anti-democratic laws passed and proposed in the Knesset. The other was the social justice protest movement, in which Israel’s democracy suddenly came alive. On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, we should reflect on what these two phenomena tell us about Israel, and what they mean for the future.
The laws proposed by Knesset members Zeev Elkin, Danny Danon and many others violate one of the deepest rationales of liberal democracy: to avoid what the great observer of democracy, Alexis de Tocqueville, called the danger of the tyranny of the majority; to protect open and critical discussion as well as the rights of minorities. more>>

Chosen Bites: Black-eyed pea salad
Eaten at Rosh Hashana in a dish called Lubiya and mentioned in the Talmud as a sign of abundance, Black-Eyed Peas were brought to the southern parts of the United States by Sephardic Jews. The African American community borrowed the Jewish New Year’s dish and created a regional New Year’s dish called Hoppin’ John.
Black eyed peas are delicious and healthy with a sweet-nutty flavor. They can be served cold in this salad or hot and tossed sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions. read more to get recipe>>

WASHINGTON, D.C. The gift from the estate of Eric F. Ross of Palm Beach, Fla., and West Orange, N.J., will help build the museum's endowment fund. The museum, located on the National Mall in Washington, announced that it aims to raise $200 million more over the next eight years. It receives federal funding for its operations and raises private funds for programs. Ross, who died in 2010, and his late wife Lore, previously donated more than $12 million to the museum.

Happy New Year from CJH
Here at the Center for Jewish History, we have plenty to celebrate in the upcoming New Year. We’d like to take this chance to share with you just a few of the amazing programs we have in store as we wrap up our 10th anniversary celebration.
Explore a number of exciting exhibitions, including Jews on Vinyl, fresh perspectives on Jewish identity and history through Jewish American pop history, and Moses Mendelssohn, a look at the life and legacy of the founder of modern Jewish philosophy. Or join us for a talk by noted professor Jay Berkovitz on the lives of Jewish women in France prior to the French Revolution, to be held on November 2 at 6:30.
As a valued member of the Center, you are part of something truly extraordinary, making programs like these and so much more available to every person who wants to explore their Jewish past.
On behalf of everyone at the Center, thank you for your support. We hope you will continue your generosity and we wish you a happy and sweet New Year.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Glickman
A New Year
A new portal begins to build an English language cultural and geographical map of Jewish Italy. Marche and Apulia are the first regions to be featured. What follows is a guide to explore and contribute to the site.
Arnaldo Momigliano on the Jews of italy
Italian history is always a difficult subject. Behind it and inside it there is the extraordinary variety of regional and urban units: the history of Florence is not the history of Pisa, or even that of Arezzo or Siena or Volterra. Where the Jews are involved, the differences in local traditions are increased by substantial local differences in the past treatment of Jews. Much of southern Italy and Sicily-splendid Jewish centers in the Middle Ages-lost their Jews in the sixteenth century during the Spanish rule. It is sometimes forgotten that Jews were kept out of most of Lombardy for more than a century until the Austrians replaced the Spaniards in 1714. Read
Leo Levi on Music
What is the status of the minhaghim with regard to liturgical music and its distribution in Jewish Italy today? The goal of this paper is, first and foremost, to report on my findings in contemporary Italy. Then, in order to better contextualize my research, I will also go back and trace the history of these musical traditions from the Middle Ages. It is a difficult task but perhaps not an impossible one. Read Annie Sacerdoti on Museums
In 1930 in Livorno, Rabbi Alfredo Toaff, with the help of the painter Ulvi Liege (Luigi Levi), set up an exhibition hall next to the city's main synagogue, to exhibit the collections of the local community. That was probably the first step toward the idea of a Jewish Museum in Italy.Read
Ariel Toaff on Cuisine
The culinary history of any people is inevitably tied into its cultural identity which, born of the religious, social and economic evolution of that people, tells the complex story of its past. This is especially true of the Jews. Clearly the most significant historical factor governing the food choices of the Jews were the strict dietary laws rooted in biblical prohibitions, which rabbinical establishments consequently interpreted and expanded. Read
Riccardo Di Segni on Liturgy
Italian Jews are under many respects an island in the Jewish world. Even the name of the land that has given them home for over twenty-two centuries was traditionally interpreted as a Hebrew word: I-tal-ya: "Island of the divine dew." The liturgy of the Italian Jews sets them apart from all of the other communities in the Diaspora. Read

After the discovery of the Cairo Genizah at the end of the 19th century, scholars hoped to discover a similar European Genizah. By a twist of fate, the scholars' dream of discovering a European Genizah came true in the last two decades. Read
Library: Fabrizio Lelli on Apulian Judaism The history of Judaism in Puglia is a distillation of thousands of stories of Mediterranean Judaism - fragments that across the millennia collectively comprise a powerful identity. Here are stories of wandering, of links sustained across great distances by faith in ancient traditions; and stories of commercial and cultural exchange across the length and breadth of this Mare Nostrum, where Jews have always played a mediating role. Read
Library: Luisa Levi D'Ancona on Women
The history of Italian Jews in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is essentially a story of social integration and embourgeoisement, with the exception of the years of Fascism, the racial laws (1938) and World War II. In Italy, each pre-unification state had a particular relation to its Jewish population, reflecting the strong regional differences that in many ways were maintained even after political unification in 1860.

NGO report: 93,000 Copts left Egypt since March
Nearly 93,000 Coptic Christians have left Egypt since 19 March, a report by an Egypt-based Coptic NGO has said.
The number may increase to 250,000 by the end of 2011, according to Naguib Gabriel, the head of the Egyptian Federation of Human Rights, which released the report.
The current trend of Coptic immigration endangers the structure of Egypt's population, Gabriel told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Sunday. He urged the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and the Egyptian cabinet to work on curbing the phenomenon. more>>

Marriages between Egyptian men and foreign women on the rise
A recent study indicated that the phenomenon of young Egyptian males marrying elderly foreign women is growing in Egypt. The study was prepared by the Prevention of Human Trafficking Unit at the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood.
According to the study, there is no specific data on the number of young men marrying foreign women since most of these marriages are not registered in Cairo. Such marriages are typically recorded in lawyer’s offices, except in cases where the wife applies to her embassy for a visitor’s visa or permanent residency for her husband.
The study went on to describe these marriages as a form of human trafficking, as the young men give up their religion, social life, customs and traditions for money or residency in a foreign country. The study added that the young men become love slaves for older women in exchange for money and gifts. more>>

Last week at the UN, Israel lost America
by Larry Derfner
“Tafasta meruba, lo tafasta,” is a Hebrew saying that means, “If you get too greedy, you end up with nothing,” and it fits well to the arm-twisting job Israel just did on Obama at the UN. By leaning on him too single-handedly to block the Palestinian statehood bid, to pressure countries like Gabon and Bosnia-Herzegovina to go along, and to give a speech that Avigdor Lieberman said he would “sign with both hands,” Israel bent Obama too far, until he just broke. In the eyes of Palestinians, Muslims of the Middle East and probably everybody else in the world, the U.S. president has now assumed the identity of the ultimate Israel lobbyist, of Mr.Hasbara. “He’s not the president of the United States, he’s the president of Israel,” a man in Ramallah said to me the day after the speech, and that’s what Palestinians think today: They flat-out hate Obama. They may hate him more than any other U.S. president in history, including George W. Bush. They thought Obama was on their side, and in the moment of truth he sold them out to the LIkud, to the settlers, to the Republican wackos. Palestinians, and presumably all Muslims, feel toward Obama today how the settlers felt toward Ariel Sharon after he decided to withdraw from Gaza: betrayed. more on +972>>

Netanyahu's speech of lies
By Akiva Eldar
Netanyahu, who is so concerned about our security that he is even demanding the creation of military bases in the West Bank, claimed the Palestinians are refusing to talk about security arrangements. Really? Let him try to deny that the Palestinians submitted a detailed security proposal, via U.S. envoy George Mitchell. How many times must Abbas repeat, in speeches and interviews, that he is willing to demilitarize the territories and even to permit an international force like the Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai, or even U.S. troops, to deploy in the Palestinian state.
We must also reveal the truth about "the refusal of the Palestinians to recognize a Jewish state in any border," as Netanyahu said to the General Assembly on Friday. His statement was made soon after Abbas submitted to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon an official request to recognize the Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, a state that will live in peace with the State of Israel.
Apparently Netanyahu did not manage to see the application and did not know that it was based on UN Resolution 181, providing for the creation of an Arab state alongside Israel, as well as on the 1988 Palestinian declaration of independence, which recognized UN Security Council Resolution 242 and referred to Israel as a Jewish state. Fresh attack on Egyptian gas pipeline to Israel
A fresh attack overnight on a pipeline delivering gas from Egypt to Israel left one person injured, witnesses and Egyptian security sources said Tuesday. At least three gunmen in a van opened fire on a gas installation before an explosion hit the pipeline near the town of al-Arish in the north of the Sinai peninsula, witnesses said.
It was the sixth such attack on the pipeline since Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February. It carries gas through the Sinai and on to Jordan and Israel. more on alahram>>
