Fierce urgency in Mid East and North Africa

We must be ready.
A wave of uprisings is sweeping through the Middle East and North Africa. As Egypt and Tunisia grapple with political transition, in Libya, a defiant al-Gaddafi has threatened to “cleanse” the country “house by house.”
Dear Aimee,

If you're like me, you've been watching with horror as news breaks from the Middle East and North Africa — peaceful protesters are being detained, harassed, beaten, tortured and even fired upon by people bent on crushing dissent.

Abdallah Salman Mohammad Hassan, a protester in Bahrain, told us a harrowing story. After he and a friend were arrested in Manama, the country's capital, he was blindfolded, beaten with sticks, punched and hung from a door for hours in detention.

"They tied my hands behind my back and then put me on a chair; I was standing on the chair. Then they put my arms behind the door from the top and pushed the chair away. I was left suspended: my body on one side of the door and my arms on the other side. It was very painful.
"I asked for water and they didn't give it to me. I wanted to pray and they refused. I didn't sleep. I was left suspended on the door for a few hours.
At least seven people were killed in Bahrain and scores have been wounded in the past weeks by security forces using excessive force against protestors."

The situation is dire in Libya, where the leader, Mu’ammar al-Gaddafi, gave a speech in which he called protesters “cockroaches” and “rats.” In one chilling statement, he threatened to "cleanse Libya house by house." This violence is unacceptable. Become a member today and help us mount an unyielding defense of human rights.

There have also been stories of hope. Amnesty researchers in Cairo described a sea of people – all ages, social classes and political backgrounds – in Tahrir Square on the day Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down, feeling part of a whole new Egypt, an Egypt reborn.

“People’s sense of achievement and pride in being able to take control of Egypt’s future reverberated across the square. ‘Put your head up high, you are Egyptian,’ was sung over and over again and was complimented by laughter, ululations, songs of praise, drums and the waving of Egyptian flags."
This is the power of peaceful protest.

I need your help to continue Amnesty’s work in the Middle East and North Africa. Join Amnesty International.

Here is my pledge to you:

Amnesty will continue to send researchers to the countries where crises are unfolding, and tell the world what is going on. We will advocate for the rights of peaceful protesters. We will hold repressive leaders accountable.

World's message to Libyan leader Gaddafi: time to end your regime

Russia and China join west in UN war crimes ruling as Britain revokes immunity for leader and family

Muammar Gaddafi is running out of options and friends as international action to pressure him into surrendering gathers momentum, with Russia and China joining the west in backing calls to prosecute him for war crimes.
Britain said it was revoking the diplomatic immunity of the Libyan leader and his family, including his high-profile son Saif al-Islam, who has had close links with the UK. David Cameron echoed Barack Obama in calling on him to go. The PM said: "All of this sends a clear message to this regime: it is time for Colonel Gaddafi to go and to go now. There is no future for Libya that includes him."
Hillary Clinton said the US was reaching out to the Libyan opposition and was not negotiating with Gaddafi.
"We want him to leave and we want him to end his regime and call off the mercenaries and troops who remain loyal to him," the US secretary of state said. "How he manages that is up to him."  more>>

Italian newspapers reveal how Berlusconi's government has been arming Gaddafi

By Ted Newcomen

Unlike their craven brethren in the "lamestream' US and UK media, the Italian newspapers have been blowing the whistle on the Berlusconi government's arms sales to the psychotic Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi who is now using those very same weapons to murder his own people.

Journalist Fiorenza Sarzanini writing in today's (26th February 2011) edition of the national Corriere Della Sera revealed how high tech weapons systems, military vehicles, and helicopters have been supplied by Italian companies in recent years. The list of exports between 2008 and 2010 includes spare parts for warships & weapons, materials for bombs, rockets, and missiles. more>>

John Galliano: 'I Love Hitler' (VIDEO)

The Sun UK has obtained a cell phone video of what certainly looks like Dior designer John Galliano stating, "I love Hitler," and, "People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f**king gassed."

The clip was reportedly taken at La Perle, the bar where Galliano was arrested for assault and making anti-Semitic remarks last Thursday. It's unclear if the video is from the same evening. (Editors' note: seems like not.) According to the Sun, he is speaking to a group of French and Italian people and being filmed by their friend.

American Latinos and Jews working together on mutual concerns

by David Shasha

I would also like to point out a very interesting conference of Jews and Latinos that is to take place at the end of March. The event is noteworthy from a Sephardic Jewish perspective because it involves Latino Gentiles and Ashkenazi Jews. The “shared heritage” of the conference’s title has nothing to do with the fact that Jews lived in Spain for over 500 years. The conference includes many of the Right Wing Zionist Ashkenazi
organizations and is in essence an Israel-fest. It is a shame that the Latinos involved in this event are completely ignorant of their own history and culture. It is yet another example of the complete inability of Sephardim to be a part of the larger public discourse. It also points to the arrogance of those Ashkenazim who see themselves as the only Jews – even
when seen in the context of Spanish civilization.

In memoriam: Avraham Robert Attal

Received from the Sephardi/Mizrahi Caucus

Avraham Robert Attal, the great bibliographer and researcher of North Africa Jewry, has passed away. A librarian emeritus at the Ben-Zvi Institute, he wrote mostly (but not exclusively) on Maghreb Jewry.  He made Aliya from Tunisia in 1954 and over the years, he published more than 170 articles and books. Among them was his monumental Les juifs d'Afrique du nord; bibliographie (Hebrew and French) of which a companion volume of updates was published several months ago ; La présse periodique juive d'Afrique du Nord (Hebrew and French; Un siècle de literature judéo-arabe tunisienne (1861-1961) (Hebrew).

He was not only human data base for innumerate scholars and students around the world, but a person who enjoyed helping others with their research.

To all those who were touch by this modest scholar, he will be greatly missed.

PeaceTimes Edition 109: Women, Education, and Work

PeaceTimes Edition 109.
WOMEN, EDUCATION, AND WORK

  FEBRUARY 2011

Editor's Note
Revolution in Libya, earthquake in New Zealand, civilian casualties in Afghanistan, budget battles in Washington and the statehouses here in the US―it’s hard to know where on earth to direct our attention. That’s one of many reasons to focus on the UN, where thousands of our sisters from more than 100 nations are gathering this week to discuss education, jobs, and other urgent matters at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) annual meeting.
This month’s issue features CEO Kim Weichel’s Taking Action report from the 2011 CSW along with my own reflections on that and other happenings. I’m especially excited about the anniversary of People Power, 25 years ago today. Don’t miss Milet Mendoza’s eloquent voice from the Philippines in Voices from the Frontlines.
As refugees flow out of Libya, Generation Peace guest writer Amanda Lynn Steger-Crawford describes her work in a program that educates young refugees to the US and helps them face the challenges of resettlement. In the first Generation Peace post last month, Abby Smith noted the difficulty many young people face in finding the jobs they expected to have after graduation. Fortunately for the world at large, many, like Amanda, are choosing to work for the common good. If you’re one of them, contact abby@peacexpeace.org or alicia@peacexpeace.org to share your story. We love hearing about the work you do, no matter what or where.
Whether you’re young or old, working for a nonprofit, raising a family, or heading a Fortune 500, we value your distinct voice and the contributions you make to a peaceful planet. From all of us, a very happy International Women’s Day! Please let us know how you celebrate this upcoming 100th anniversary.

Women in the Boardroom, Women in the Kitchen: CSW 55

MARY LISTON LIEPOLD
Right now we are hearing nothing from the US Congress about family meals or the jobs that buy them. They’re caught up in budget-cutting instead. Meanwhile, across the Middle East, citizens are rising up in unprecedented numbers to press their governments for change. In most cases, their discontent has as much to do with lack of jobs and rising global food prices as it does with the ideal of democracy. In life as we live it day to day, food comes first. It’s especially timely, then, that the 2011 UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) meeting that opened on Tuesday is focused on jobs for women.

Taking Action: CSW Smorgasbord

KIMBERLY WEICHEL
I’m delighted to send you this article from New York, where I am participating in the annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) meetings held at the UN. This is the first week and it is an extraordinary experience to share with thousands of our sisters as we focus on an array of key issues affecting women. There are formal sessions held at the UN, and then a smorgasbord of programs organized by NGOs held near the UN. There is so much to attend it is hard to choose!

Generation Peace: Bringing Education to Life, for Me and the Lucky 1%

AMANDA LYNN CRAWFORD-STEGER
The nonprofit I work with is called PAIR, which stands for the Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees. PAIR has taken on the ambitious task of educating refugee youth between the ages of 11 and 18 from all over the world. The word education carries its own connotations for persons working outside and within its field, but for me it means giving a person who has no other way of reaching their full potential a chance at life.

Freedom March: My Advice to Netanyahu

By Uri Avnery
What will happen if hundreds of thousands of Palestinians march ..?

Why don't the masses stream to the square here, too, and throw Bibi out?' my taxi driver exclaimed when we were passing Rabin Square. The wide expanse was almost empty, with only a few mothers and their children enjoying the mild winter sun.
The masses will not stream to the square, and Binyamin Netanyahu can be thrown out only through the ballot box.
If this does not happen, Israelis can blame nobody but themselves.
If the Israeli Left is unable to bring together a serious political force, which can put Israel on the road to peace and social justice, it has only itself to blame. more>>

Egypt/Turkey-Israel: 'A clean break'

by Eric Walberg

While Egypt’s revolution was very much about domestic matters -- bread and butter, corruption, repression -- its most immediate effects have been international. Not for a long time has Egypt loomed so large in the region, to both friend and foe. At least 13 of the 22 Arab League countries are now affected: Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.
But just as powerful has been the resonance in Israel. It has no precedent for an assertive, democratic neighbor. Except for Turkey.
As the US was putting the finishing touches on NATO (established in April 1949), Turkey became the first Muslim nation to recognize Israel, in March 1949 (Iran did so a year later). Under the watchful eye of its military, Turkey and Israel had close diplomatic, economic and military relations throughout the Cold War. continued>>

CAIRO: Protesters remained camped out in Tahrir Square through the early hours of Sunday, in defiance of curfew and a violent crackdown by military police the previous night.
By Saturday afternoon, more than a thousand protesters were back in Tahrir Square after being forcefully dispersed by military police in the early hours of that day following mass protests on what was dubbed “Friday of Cleansing.”
Protesters reiterated their demands to sack Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq and the Cabinet, the release of political detainees, dismantling the State Security apparatus and annulling the emergency law.
Protesters chanted slogans condemning the continuation of Shafiq's government, pressuring the army to push for more reforms.
Scattered in the square, protesters chanted: "Freedom where are you, Shafik is standing between me and you," and "The people want to overthrow the government." more>>

Telling the remarkable stories of Sephardic Jews

A Muslim from Sarajevo hid a Jewish friend from the Nazis and was later shielded from the Balkans' violence in the 1990s by a Jewish aid group. It's just one of the many tales from a recent talk in Los Angeles about Sephardic Jewry.

In Sarajevo, a Muslim woman named Zeyneba Hardaga hid her Jewish friend Josef Kabilo from the Nazis and in 1985 was recognized by Israel as a "Righteous Gentile" whose acts had saved a Jewish life.

Fast forward to 1994, the height of the Bosnian Serb siege of Sarajevo, which killed 12,500 of the city's residents over three years. more>>

Monkey Bar

Tired of hearing all the bad news that comes out of our TV's, radios, newspapers, magazines, e-mails ... I frankly get confused sometimes when listening to the same news repeated over and over during the day, especially if it's about a suicide bombing; I don't know if it's about a new explosion or the same one reported earlier. The worst is the television news ticker-tape: they keep on repeating tragic events or bombing attacks that took place three or four days earlier. If one doesn't pay close attention, the same attack can mistakenly be counted as thirty or forty.
Try happy news, leave everything behind and go out to a show or meet friends at a bar who don't care about what's happening in the world, or have a nice dinner in restaurant
Looking for a swinging evening of entertainment? Then let me recommend the Monkey Bar.  Last night I had a terrific time there.
Elegant bar and dinning room, classy ambiance,  great food, impeccable service, great entertainment and a great place to catch-up on the latest  gossips and  news, or  to conduct  some monkey business.
Be patient, you might need to wait for the animation.  Enjoy my friends

Have a drink and  relax at the bar.  and don't forget to mention to Chee Chee the bartender that you are a good friend of Joe La Gargoulette, he'll add an extra cherry. The bar is dark and discreet.Banana Daiquiris are properly stirred and vermouthed;remember to ask Chee for the latest gossips and what's going on in the world.

Ask him about the Monkey waiters  you'll have a kick

Chee Chee loves unshelled peanuts, keep on throwing him peanuts during the conversation.

At the bar you'll find Zouzou Ouzo, philospher, poet and writer one of the habitués

In the dinning room, the headwaiter, Simian, the one with the longest tail  and arms , recently promoted from Chef de Rang, knows what's important and will take good care of you. Don't forget to slip him a few bananas.

From the beautiful menu card: I recommend the roasted peanuts enchiladas with refried bananas entrée,  and from la cave ask le sommelier for a 1968 Year Of The Monkey bottle of Classico DaVinci Sirop de Banane.

For dessert la specialité de la maison, Monkey Bread with banana split, topped with banana pudding. Forget Espresso, Cappucino, Frappucino, or Latté, order Kopi Luwak (Malay) civet coffee  the world's most expensive. It is made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract, the beans are then defecated, keeping their shape. After gathering, thorough washing, sun drying, light roasting and brewing, these beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness, widely noted as the most expensive coffee in the world. And for pousse-café a banana liqueur.

Everything  is usually quiet before happy hour starts.
Then at midway happy hour,  the band starts playing music , the place gets very noisy, and  with a few exceptions,  all the patrons start swinging.
Reaction from a patron who was there for a quiet drink and meditation
