ElBaradei visits a museum, a church and a synagogue

CAIRO // In his first tour in Cairo yesterday after more than a month and a half abroad, Mohammed ElBaradei chose to visit a neighbourhood that has Islamic, Christian and Jewish heritage.

Mr ElBaradei, 67, visited the Coptic Museum, the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue and finished his two-hour tour by visiting Amr ibn El-As Mosque in Old Cairo for noon prayers.

The former director of the UN’s nuclear watchdog was surrounded by about 100 of his young supporters and campaigners, many of whom were wearing white T-shirts with his trademark moustache and eyeglasses. Some carried banners urging Egyptians to participate in the “change” that Mr ElBaradei and his National Association for Change are promoting.  more on thenational>>

Comic Hero Tintin Nets $1.3 Million in Auction at Drouot-Montaigne

A porter displays a watercolor, named "Tintin and the Sea Shells" drawn by Belgian creator Herge during the auction of rare memorabilia of Tintin, at the Drouot auction's house, in Paris, Saturday May 29, 2010. The panel was sold for euro 105,000 ($129,000). AP Photo/Thibault Camus.

PARIS (AP).- A life-size bronze statue of comic book reporter Tintin and more than 200 other items linked to the diminutive globetrotter have fetched more than euro1 million ($1.3 million) at a Paris auction.

The most expensive lot was two inked and water-painted original panels from the 1938 "King Ottokar's Sceptre" album, which went for euro243,750 ($299,620).

The bronze statue, showing Tintin with his hands in his pockets and dog Snowy at his side, went for euro 125,000 ($153,650) in the Saturday auction at the Drouot-Montaigne auction house.

Belgian artist Herge's adventures of Tintin have been translated into nearly 80 languages and sold more than 200 million books since 1929. Racial and cultural stereotypes in books such as "Tintin in the Congo" have prompted criticism, but demand for Tintin artifacts remains strong.

Shocking News Off Gaza

from Jeremi ben-Ami

Aimee --
Like many of you, I am still absorbing the terrible news from the waters off of Israel and Gaza this morning.
Going into this weekend, we knew there were few good outcomes likely from the latest effort to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip in the face of Israel's determination to prevent it.
But none of us expected the tragedy we woke up to this morning, a day on which we honor the memory of U.S. soldiers who served and died in prior wars.
As one of our supporters wrote to me this morning, "how many more people need to die, how many more children deprived of a father or mother, before this conflict is settled and people can live in peace and security, while devoting their energy to building better lives?"
With details still emerging and propaganda spinning furiously on all sides - one simple truth stands clear to us: today's events are the natural outgrowth of the larger, ongoing failure to resolve this conflict peacefully through a two-state solution.
It is up to our leaders to turn this crisis into a real push to end the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians now - otherwise events will spin even further out of control. We will have more to say on how in the days ahead.
In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts with us by responding directly to this message and we'll put together a webpage for feedback and reactions from the J Street community later on in the week.
Our statement reacting to the day's events follows:
J Street is deeply shocked and saddened by reports that at least 10 civilians have been killed and dozens more wounded (including Israeli soldiers) this morning as Israel intercepted a naval convoy bringing humanitarian supplies and construction materials to the Gaza Strip.
We express our condolences to the families of those killed and we wish the injured a full and speedy recovery. We hope that leaders on all sides will take immediate steps to ensure that this incident does not escalate into a broader round of violence - in Israel, in Gaza, or in the region.
There will undoubtedly be calls in the coming days for a UN investigation into today's events. A credible, independent commission appointed by the Israeli government should provide the world with a full and complete report into the causes and circumstances surrounding the day's events and establish responsibility for the violence and bloodshed.
This shocking outcome of an effort to bring humanitarian relief to the people of Gaza is in part a consequence of the ongoing, counterproductive Israeli blockade of Gaza. J Street has been and continues to be opposed to the blockade - believing that there are better ways to ensure Israel's security and to prevent weapons smuggling than a complete closure of the Gaza Strip.
We do not know yet what the impact of today's incident will be on the just-restarted peace process, on Israel's relations with the international community, or on the health of Arab-Jewish relations within Israel itself.
We do know, however, that today is one more nail in the coffin for hopes of ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict peacefully and diplomatically and for preserving Israel's Jewish and democratic character. We urge President Obama and other international and regional leaders to take today's terrible news as an opportunity to engage even more forcefully in immediate efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
We'll be in touch,
- Jeremy

Israel's sea raid sparks international furor

Israeli commandos stormed an aid flotilla headed for the Gaza Stip Monday, killing activists and sparking worldwide protests.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey withdrew its ambassador to Israel and called for an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council as criticism and condemnations arose across Europe and the Arab world Monday over Israel's deadly commando raid on ships taking humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The raid, in which at least 10 pro-Palestinian activists were killed, was a new blow to Israel's international standing at a time when the West — including the United States — have grown frustrated with its stance in the peace process. The bloodshed particularly hurts its relations with Turkey, which was once a close regional ally of Israel but has become increasingly critical of it.
The Obama administration voiced concern Monday about the Israeli action. continued on USAtoday>>

In Cairo, the once-crowded Shar Hashamaim is restored, but there are almost no Jews left to pray in it.
Special to the Jewish Week

I make it a point to go to shul on Saturday morning, and that wasn’t going to change when I found myself in Cairo last summer. Yes, it is in an Arab country, but it is my Arab country, where I was born and where of late I have found myself traveling again and again. There is no one there for me — the 80,000 Jews who once lived in Egypt are pretty much gone, as are all my relatives. Cairo, to paraphrase Janet Flanner, was yesterday.
While at a festive gathering at the home of the United States ambassador, I asked if there were services I could attend that coming Saturday. Everyone shrugged, but then the head of Egypt’s virtually nonexistent Jewish community, Carmen Weinstein, spoke up to say there was certainly a place where I could pray, and I thought I detected a certain edge in her voice. more on the Jewishweek>>

Israel's apartheid road

by Rachel Shabi

If you didn't have peripheral vision, it would probably be fine. If you didn't glance to the sides of Israel's highway 443 between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, then it wouldn't smack you in the face that the road is – how shall we put it? – segregated. As it is, you can't help but notice that when the 443 passes by the Israeli town of Modi'in and heads east into the occupied West Bank, some of its side-routes are blocked. Concrete boulders, metal barriers, rubble and heaps of rubbish halt roads from Palestinian villages such as Beit Sira and Beit Ur al-Fuka.
And if you stop at one of those barricades, a complicated coping apparatus comes to light: cars deposit weary Palestinians who work inside Israel at these blocked routes; on the other side, lines of parked Palestinian cabs await to resume the interrupted journey home. continued on theguardianuk>>
