Café Demel in Vienna
In 1786 confectionary assistant, Ludwig Dehne settled in Vienna. He started selling frozen goods then extended to candy and jam filled doughnuts. Demel is now an Austrian institution with cafes in Vienna and Salzburg, there is also a branch in New York, and the spring of 2010 in Alexandria, and Cairo, Egypt The Demel is a very smart cafe and the food delicious.
A luxurious satellite of the centuries-old Viennese pastry shop is located on the lower level of the new shopping arcade in The Plaza Hotel. The mahogany cafe serves lavish classics like meringue-topped Russian punsch torte, almond-laced Esterhazy torte, multilayered Dobos torte, chocolate Sacher torte and apple strudel. Most of the cakes and pastries range $5 to $8 a slice. Whole cakes start at $60 and should be ordered a few days ahead. A variety of imported coffee from Vienna is served and can be embellished with a cloud of whipped cream.
As Vienna's most famous pâtisserie, Demel offers a wonderful selection of cakes, pastries and chocolates. Pride of place, however, must go to their wonderful Sacher and Linzertorte. Truly delectable!

Chocolate Sachertorte                                        The twelve-layer Dobostorte (yes, twelve-layer baby)
And though our economy may be going to shambles, the clientele here doesn't seem to bat an eye at $8 for a slice of cake.

Complementary when the check is presented: Two dainty bites of  Wiener Apfelstrudel and the Fragelité   The Fragilité paired crisp mille feuille with a rich and nutty praline cream, the apple strudel with minced apples and walnuts, and the slightest hand of cinnamon.
At my last visit to the Café, sitting at a table next to me, were three 10 foot tall blue skinned Na'vi from the planet Pandora, guests of a bankster and a stockbroker, discussing pensions and investments while each wolfing down two tortes: Sachertorte,.Linzertorte, and one Fragilité .  The two hosts highly recommended the Intalaxima* mutual fund, guaranteeing the investors from Pandora, that their investment will double every six months.  The first thing I did after leaving the cafe was to search for this mutual fund, no such fund existed

Demel has always been a much loved meeting point of the aristocracy,  Egyptian émigrés, alien travelers from outer space, as well as of the regular people who can afford the sweets. Empress Sissi liked to indulge in the sweets that were made at the K.u.K. (Imperial and Royal) Court Confectionery Bakery; the young empress did not buy anything herself in the shop at the Kohlmarkt; rather, she got Mr. Demel himself to personally deliver the candied violets that she so loved, amongst other things, to the royal court at the Hofburg.

Cafe Demel, is a famous chocolatier in Vienna, Austria. It was founded in 1786 on the Michaelerplatz. In 1857, August Dehne (the son of the founder Ludwig Dehne) gave the company to Christof Demel, who moved the bakery to the Kohlmarkt, where the Demel is still today. The house was headed by the Demels until 1972, when Udo Proksch bought the company. In 1989, the year Proksch was arrested, the Raiffeisen Bank became the owner of the famous company.
A curiosity is that the waitresses address their patrons in the 3rd person ("He/She wishes").
In 2002 Do&Co took over the Demel.

The restaurant still maintains its original interior design which is quite lovely. I can sit here and enjoy a hot beverage & sweet pastry and imagine myself being back in the old days. The cafe is always packed with Viennese & visitors alike so be patient if you can't get a seat. When the weather is warm, it's great to sit outside and enjoy the weather.

The other attractions are the "Bill Clinton" and "Kofi Annan" cakes on display behind a glass wall in the kitchen area.

JOJO

*Intalaxima was a fictitious name of a company, we used it as an inside joke between a handful of traders at the Cairo's stock exchange in the 1950's/60/s.  Many many funny stories about it.

La rencontre®
(Ecrit le 25 décembre 2009)
Une rencontre inespérée
Avec la toute désirée
Révèle mon émoi
Aussi bien que ma foi

Dans le silence du temps
Et la surprise du moment.

J'accepte ce don®
(Ecrit le 19 janvier 2010)
J'accepte le don de cette fleur
Qui spontanément embellit ma vie,
Son sourire naturel fait mon bonheur
Et son parfum innocent me sourit.
Son sourire tout plein d'innocence
Réchauffe mon coeur de tendresse;

Egypt police arrest 'jihadist cell' planning attacks on Israelis

sent by David Shasha

Egyptian police have arrested at least 23 men suspected of plotting attacks against Israeli visitors to Egypt, US ships in the Suez Canal, and of trying to join the 'jihad' in Darfur, Interior Ministry sources said Sunday.

The men were arrested in Mansoura, northeast of Cairo, two months ago. Authorities claim they are members of a new Islamic militant group.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, government sources said that Egypt's domestic intelligence service, State Security Investigations, had confiscated "a large amount" of explosives, including material similar to that used in the Qassam rockets Hamas has fired at Israel, in a raid earlier this month

.

They said a State Security prosecutor has accused the group of 23 men of plotting attacks against the Nile delta shrine of Abu Hasira, a 19th century rabbi whose grave is a pilgrimage site for Jews. more on Ha'aretz>>

Nazi souvenirs on sale in Tel Aviv

If it happened in any other country, we'd be crying 'anti-Semitism!' but it's happening in the first Hebrew city in broad daylight. And yes, there are customers

by Assaf Weiss

"If you buy this Nazi medal, I'll throw in the Hitler postcard at half price." On Friday afternoon at Tel Aviv's Dizengoff Square flea market, among the antique porcelain, collector's vinyl records and vintage clothes, I suddenly see a portrait of Hitler on a stamp. Next to the stamp are a number of postcards sent home by SS officers in the 1940s, signed off with the infamous salutation "heil."

Arab regimes are restoring abandoned Jewish historical sites, a subtle acknowledgement of where power now resides in the Middle East

Beirut’s Magen Abraham synagogue, currently undergoing renovation.

It’s strange seeing the synagogue’s Hebrew letters in the middle of Beirut. Hezbollah billboards near the Southern border sometimes bear propaganda translated into Hebrew, and there are Hebrew letters on the tombstones of Beirut’s Jewish cemetery. But Maghen Abraham is a different story, a Jewish house of worship being rebuilt in an exclusive Beirut neighborhood with the blessing of the Lebanese government. It would be a symbol of rebirth, if not for the fact that no one is likely to worship there, certainly none of Lebanon’s five and a half million Jewish neighbors in Israel, with which the Beirut government is officially at war. The painful truth: disaster Haiti - good for the Jews

I don't read Hebrew (unfortunately, at times). However, Google is an awesome tool, because it translates Hebrew for me, not perfectly, but enough so that I get it. So to all of you people who have said this article was written by an antisemitic, please be advised that the article is a straight translation (I did not change or correct anything) from the original article which appeared in the Hebrew Daily "Ma'ariv".

Tamir Haas |
Period in which his country is an attack based media reports critical of anti-Semitism, while dealing with terrorists who managed to adopt the winning image of victims of war. Haiti disaster can say is best thing that could happen to us.

So why blood, destruction, poverty, hunger and children orphaned Jewish state's good? First, because world attention was covered elsewhere Global Communications has a story more interesting. Second, given any place disaster hero needs a hero right now this is us. I must admit that I was not surprised if consideration of the image point of view means establishing hospital in Haiti along with Action Forces Home Front Command's rescue, received more weight than humanitarian considerations.

If you wish to read the rest, I am providing for my translated page though I don't guarantee it will work for you if you don't have the translator tool installed. The original page in Hebrew is here.

Holocaust Exploited

Professor Norman Finkelstein is one of the world's most outspoken and tenacious scholars on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and a fierce critic of the way Israel's supporters wield the memory of the Holocaust in America to gain sympathy of the unsuspecting Americans.
Author of Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History, along with Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict and other books, Finkelstein was hailed by a leading authority of Holocaust studies, the late Raul Hilberg, for his "acuity of vision and analytical power" and by prominent Israeli-British historian Avi Shlaim as "as a very able, very erudite and original scholar."
In 2007, Prof. Finkelstein was denied tenure at DePaul University because of an intimidation campaign spearheaded by Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz.
Professor Norman Finkelstein, whose parents were victims of the Holocaust, speaks out on The Holocaust Industry with Dr. Israel Charny, Israeli psychologist and historian in this interview, please listen in:
