Les Juifs de Nasser

par Alec Nacamuli

7ième partie
voir 6ieme partie ici

Settlement freeze now

Tell President Obama you support his "Freeze means Freeze" approach to Israeli settlement construction.

Aimee -
Following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rejection of a full settlement freeze, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday that President Obama "wants to see a stop to settlements - not some settlements, not outposts, not natural-growth exceptions." [1]
Amen. A freeze means a freeze.
This is exactly the sort of leadership we need from the President and Secretary of State if we are going to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - the only way to truly secure Israel's future as a Jewish, democratic homeland.
You can bet the Obama Administration is already hearing from hawkish voices on Israel - urging him to make exceptions, allow for more settlement growth, and to go slow.
No way - a freeze means a freeze. We've got to make sure the President knows pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans support his strong line on settlements, for both Israel's and America's sake and security.
Continued Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank is a real obstacle to peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians - and as President Obama said, settlements "have to be stopped." [2]
Of course, Israeli settlements aren't the only obstacle to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Palestinians also have responsibilities of their own - they must bring an end to terror and incitement against Israel and maintain a ceasefire in Gaza.
Israel also needs to allow for Palestinian freedom of movement in the West Bank and to open the Gaza border crossings for humanitarian supplies and reconstruction materials.
You and I know that the dance between Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Obama over settlements is just getting started. As in the past, Netanyahu will stall - hoping his American backers have enough time to undermine the President's efforts in Congress or convince the President that the political costs of bold leadership are too high.
We've got to make sure the President and his Administration hear from the majority of Americans like us who support the President's call for a settlement freeze, without exceptions, right now.
Thanks,
Isaac

ICE Recovers Egyptian Artifacts Stolen From a Museum in the Netherlands

One of the pieces recovered is a 7-inch-high depiction of a mummy with arms folded over the chest and hoes in each hand

NEW YORK, NY.- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement recovered seven artifacts of Egyptian origin that were found at a Manhattan auction house. The cultural heritage items were stolen from the Bijbels Museum in Amsterdam on July 29, 2007 in the middle of the afternoon. Dutch police contacted ICE to assist in the recovery of the artifacts on their behalf.

The investigation received significant help from the Art Loss Register (ALR) of New York, an organization that maintains a database of stolen works of art. The ALR discovered the artifacts at the Manhattan auction house, which turned the artifacts over to the Register and ICE agents.

One of the pieces recovered is a 7-inch-high depiction of a mummy with arms folded over the chest and hoes in each hand. It dates to between 1307 and 1070 B.C. The other recovered artifacts were an bronze figure of Imhotep, artchitect of the first pyramid, and one of Hapokrates, and an Egyptian painted Wood Osiris, all dating as far back as 712 B.C.

"The recovery of these artifacts sends a strong message to thieves that the market to sell stolen antiquities in the United States is freezing up." said Peter J. Smith, special agent in charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in New York. "ICE is committed to working closely with foreign governments and organizations like the ALR to recover priceless works of art and antiquities so they can be returned to their rightful owners."

My Father My Lord
Israel, 75 minutes
Dir: David Volach

An intimate and emotional story of the conflict between a father's love and his deep devotion to religion. A respected Orthodox Rabbi (Assi Dayan, Israel's leading actor/director, featured in TIME OF FAVOR) dotes on his only son but his religious strictures leave an emotional gap between the impish child and the stern father. When the father's all-consuming obsession with observing religious ritual inadvertently leads to tragedy, his previously subservient wife rages against both her husband and God.
A dramatic retelling of the story of Abraham and Isaac with a devastating twist.

Film Project Announcement: Iraqi Jewish Music

sent by David Shasha

Friends,

"On the Banks of the Tigris" celebrates the Jewish contribution to Iraqi
music and the cultural ties that link all Iraqis. The film follows Majid
Shokor, an Iraqi-Australian from a Muslim background, who has the courage to
break taboos in his quest for knowledge and truth. It's a joyous musical
and historical journey that promotes peace and cultural dialogue (see attached newspaper article).

For more information on the film, Majid's recent filming trip to Iraq, and to view the trailer please visit: http://www.fruitfulfilms.com.au/films/tigris

We would deeply appreciate your assistance in helping us to complete this wonderful film. We urgently need to raise $10,000 to work with one of Australia's top editors on a short cut from all the material we've filmed - in Australia, Israel, Europe and Iraq. This will be a major step toward making a full-length version of the film for TV and worldwide distribution.

Please favourably consider making a donation to help complete this important project.
Donations (tax deductible in the USA or Australia) can be made through:

- San Francisco Film Society

Our previous funders include Film Victoria, the Victorian Multicultural Commission, philanthropic trusts, and generous individual donors.

If you have any questions about the project or how to donate, please contact me.

Thank you for believing in the power of music and the arts to create positive change and reconciliation.

Chers amis,

May Podcast: A Conversion Story for Shavuot

Tonight begins the festival of Shavuot which commemorates the ancient Israelites receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai.

The holiday is also associated with the story of Ruth, a Moabite woman, and her relationship to her Israelite mother-in-law, Naomi. As recounted in the Book of Ruth, traditionally chanted on Shavuot, after Naomi and her daughters-in-laws Ruth and Orpah all become widows, Naomi urges the two younger women to leave her and find new husbands. Orpah does as Naomi suggests but Ruth refuses, telling her: "Wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge; your people shall be my people and your God shall be my God." (Ruth 1:16). Jewish tradition reads this moment as Ruth's acceptance of Judaism. Ruth is known as the first convert, and her story has come to serve as a source book and inspiration for conversion.

In keeping with the themes of the Jewish calendar, our podcast of the month comes from the oral history of Arva Gray, a Mormon who converted to Judaism in the 1950s.Listen to Gray recount her Jewish experiences in the kitchen, in her neighborhood, and as a leader in Seattle's Jewish community.

This year, Italian National Day is dedicated to the regions of Veneto and Apulia. In conjunction with the celebrations, Centro Primo Levi, the Consulate General of Italy, and the Italian Cultural Institute have invited three prominent scholars to meet with the public in New York and share news and projects concerning Jewish life in their regions.

Shaul Bassi, Gadi Luzzatto-Voghera, and Fabrizio Lelli will offer geo-cultural insights on the Jewish past of Venice and Lecce, situated at the extreme north and south of the Italian peninsula's eastern edge. They will also share with us some of the activities in progress, addressing public access, education, public debate, and exchange with Israel.

Professors Luzzatto and Bassi will discuss plans for the Renato Maestro Library and Archive of Venice's Jewish community, as well as the Venice Center for International Jewish Studies, in relation to the broader Venetian cultural forum. This forum's offerings range from the Biennial to the Film Festival and has  most recently come to include the "Incroci di Civiltà" literary festival, an offspring of the University Cà Foscari.

Prof. Lelli will illustrate two academic projects that delve into four centuries of linguistic and social history in Salento. He will offer a reading of Apulia's recent rediscovery of Jewish practice in the context of its multilayered cultural landscape.

The event is made possible in part through the generous support of Regione Veneto and Regione Puglia. The public program of Centro Primo Levi is made possible through an annual grant of the Cahnman Foundation.

J Street calls on American Jews, PM, Knesset to stand against discriminatory legislation

J Street is deeply troubled by legislative proposals under active consideration in Israel to dramatically limit the civil and democratic rights of Israeli citizens.  Once merely the pipe dreams of Israel's ultra-nationalist right-wing, today they are moving forward with alarming speed in both the Israeli Cabinet and in the Knesset.
Just today, a law passed its first reading in the Knesset aimed at limiting the free speech rights of Israel's citizens.  Another proposal working its way through the process would condition citizenship rights on pledging loyalty to Israel as a Jewish, Zionist state.  Others would further limit free expression and constrain democracy.
What was months ago just the racist campaign platform of Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu Party (and secured only 15 of the Knesset's 120 seats) is now an active legislative agenda for a range of right-wing parties, being advanced in the Knesset.
These proposals threaten not just the health of Israel's democracy but the soul of the Jewish people.  Targeting the Arab Israeli minority for discriminatory treatment and punishment is anti-democratic, offends basic Jewish values, and threatens to undermine Israel's own national interest.
Israel's democracy, founded with a strong commitment to full civil rights for all its citizens enshrined in the country's Declaration of Independence, has been a source of great pride for Jews around the world and is a prime reason why Americans have been so proud to support the special U.S.-Israel relationship that we have so deeply valued for 61 years.  Democracy can be painful as can dissent - but both are essential to the health of Israel and of the Jewish people.
The Lieberman agenda threatens not simply to undermine the country's democratic heritage, but also the Jewish and democratic values that form the cornerstone of the U.S.-Israel relationship.
During the recent election campaign, J Street expressed grave concern over the racist and hateful campaign that Avigdor Lieberman rode into the Foreign Minister's office.  Now that Lieberman and his allies are poised to fulfill his racist campaign pledges, we renew our call on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli Knesset to stand up for the values and principles that unite Jews around the world and to prevent these proposals from becoming law.
We also reiterate our call for all organizations and individuals in this country who care about Israel's future, its democracy and its Jewish character to speak out forcefully against the Lieberman agenda. We commend Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League for likening the loyalty oath to McCarthyism and calling it discriminatory.  Further statements from American Jewish leaders are needed to help Israel's far-right understand that these proposals are out-of-bounds and unacceptable to nearly all American Jews.
No less than the foundations of Israel's democracy and the soul of the Jewish people are at risk.

Amos Elon dies at 82

provocative writer examined the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

His second book, 'The Israelis: Founders and Sons,' challenged the heroic image of his country's Zionist founders.

Reporting from Jerusalem -- Amos Elon, whose critical explorations of Jewish history and the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict made him one of the most distinguished and provocative Israeli authors of his time, died Monday in Italy, his home for the last five years. He was 82.

His wife, Beth, said the cause of death was leukemia.

Elon was a well-known journalist in Israel in 1971 when his second book, "The Israelis: Founders and Sons," challenged the heroic image of his country's Zionist founders and gained him international recognition. His portrayal was generally sympathetic but faulted the European-born pioneers for being blinded by an ancient claim to Palestine and failing to consider the fate of Arabs already living there.

"The Arabs bore no responsibility for the centuries-long suffering of Jews in Europe," Elon wrote, voicing criticism that is common in Israel today but was rare at the time. "Whatever their subsequent follies and outrages might be, the punishment of the Arabs for the sins of Europe must burden the conscience of Israelis for a long time to come."

Talking Art Louvre Abu Dhabi Features the Museum's First Acquisitions

Edouard Manet (French, 1832-1883). Still Life with Bag and Garlic, 1862. Oil on canvas; 27 x 35 cm.

ABU DHABI.- On the occasion of a state visit by Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic, His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and President Sarkozy today inaugurated a preview experience of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the first universal museum in the Middle East. The event took place as part of a celebration to mark the commencement of construction of the museum. The preview, titled Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi, will reveal for the first time the concept of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, with works from the Louvre and other French national museums being shown with the first acquisitions for the Louvre’s Abu Dhabi developing collection.

Presented in Gallery One of Emirates Palace through 2 July, the 90-minute preview features a brief film screening illustrating the Louvre Abu Dhabi design by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel; an illustrated talk about the concept of the Louvre Abu Dhabi; and a guided tour of a group of artworks specially chosen to show the curatorial vision for the museum. Centre Pompidou Dedicates Exhibition to Women: elles@centrepompidou

Suzanne Valadon, La Chambre bleue, 1923. Oil on canvas, 90 x 116 cm. Collection Centre Pompidou, Musée national d’art moderne (diffusion RMN, photo: Jacqueline Hyde)

PARIS.- The new hang of the permanent collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne is to be entirely devoted to modern and contemporary women artists – the first time such a thing will have been done by a national museum of art.

The exhibition, drawing on one of the world’s greatest collections of modern and contemporary art, the largest in Europe, represents a vigorous affirmation of the Museum’s commitment to women artists of every nationality, across all the disciplines, returning them to their rightful place at the centre of the modern and contemporary art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Following “Big Bang” in 2005 and “Le Mouvement des Images” in 2006-2007, “elles@centrepompidou” will be the third thematic hang of the permanent collections of the Musée National d’Art Moderne.

Organized chronologically and thematically, the exhibition brings together more than 500 works by more than 200 artists, from the early twentieth century to our own day. more>>

The Hergé Museum: Cartoon Character Tintin Gets a Museum

Frenchman Christian de Portzamparc designed the museum. © Nicolas Borel. Atelier de Portzamparc 2009
LOUVAIN-la-NEUVE, BELGIUM.- Over the years, Hergé’s artistic output has become established as a work of distinction.

The idea of a museum had been germinating from as far back as 1979, while he was still alive. The goal was always to make Hergé’s myriad creations known to the wider public.

To do justice to such an important project, a lot of time and careful reflection was necessary. The main task was to strike the right balance between the nuances of a complex reality and the legendary status that was starting to develop around the man and his creation.

In 1986, three years after the artist passed away, the idea took shape in the form of the Hergé Foundation. From the start of the new millennium, this organization (now renamed Studios Hergé) has worked tirelessly to identify and catalogue the most suitable elements for exhibition in a museum consecrated to Hergé.

On 10 January 2001, Tintin’s ‘birthday’, the important announcement was made: the Hergé Museum was to be built in Louvain-la-Neuve, a recently created university town, less than 30 kilometres from Brussels.

Eight years later and the dream came true. The Hergé Museum opens its doors at the start of June 2009, two years after the first stone was laid on 22 May 2007, the artist’s birthday. more>>
