Kadima Official: 'The Battle Appears Lost, Voters Shifting Right
(IsraelNN.com) A senior member of the ruling Kadima party was quoted as saying Friday that the dovish camp's situation in the election “appears bad, and in fact, the battle appears to be lost,” according to a report in News1.

I have recently read several of my co-religionists' pieces in The Standard-Times, and would like to offer a different Jewish view on the siege of Gaza.
Does the world unfairly fault Israel for protecting itself, as Irving Fradkin and Bob Feingold maintain? Are critics of Israel usually anti-Semites, as another recent article suggests? The answer to both of these questions is an emphatic "no."
Before the siege of Gaza, Hamas and Israel had been exchanging rockets for months, both parties in violation of a truce. On Nov. 4, Israel launched attacks in Gaza. On Dec. 19 Hamas announced an end to the truce, and on Dec. 27, Israel unleashed its tremendous military might on a population of 1.5 million locked into a space twice the size of Dartmouth. After the escalation of hostilities, three Israeli civilians were killed, 1,500 Palestinians were killed — half of them children — and 10 Israeli Defense Force soldiers were killed, half by "friendly fire."
It is the reckless and disproportionate use of force on a civilian population that had nowhere to go, combined with the use of phosphorus bombs on civilians and other violations of international law, that has so enraged the world and drawn the criticism of the United Nations and human rights organizations. In addition, there was indiscriminate bombing of infrastructure — sewage plants, first responders, medical facilities, U.N. food distribution centers, schools and aid agencies. This was calculated to punish Palestinians for voting for Hamas, and for no strategic military reason. continued>>

I can understand that after centuries of persecution it's satisfying for a Jewish state to be the aggressor for a change, but there's a codicil that goes with that role. You don't get to act like a victim any more. "Poor little Israel" just sounds silly when you're the dominant power in the Middle East. When you've invaded several of your neighbors, bombed and defeated them in combat, occupied their land, and taken their homes away from them, it's time to stop acting oppressed. Yes, Arab states deny your right to exist, threaten to drive you into the sea, and all the rest of their futile, helpless rhetoric. The fact is, you have the upper hand and they don't. You have sophisticated arms and they don't. You have nuclear weapons and they don't. So stop pretending to be pathetic. It doesn't play well in Peoria.
(Yes, I know, we Americans should talk--always trembling in our boots about terrorists and 'rogue states' and 'evil empires' when we have enough nukes to blow up entire continents, and spend more on arms in an hour than most of the world's nations spend in a year. But just because we're hypocrites and Nervous Nellies doesn't mean you have to be). more>>

Spectacle: "Moïse, Dalida & Moi"

Je voudrais attirer votre attention sur un spectacle émouvant et original écrit et interprété par la pétillante et dynamique "bint el balad" Isabelle de Botton.
Ce One Woman Show, "Moïse, Dalida & Moi", saura vous faire rire, pleurer, réfléchir et vous mènera en voyage "down memory lane"
Le spectacle a déjà été présenté et "testé" à Montreux où il a reçu un accueil des plus enthousiaste.
Le ton est juste. Elle a sut traduire en scène ce que nous avons tous ressenti et que nous ressentons peut être encore des événements de 1956 et de l'intégration dans nos pays. On est fasciné par la sensibilité d'Isabelle qui, en actrice chevronnée, jongle avec les personnages de son passé, toujours présents.
Ce spectacle est une manière formidable de faire connaître notre histoire.
Alors envoyez vos proches pour faire un triomphe à notre belle Isabelle d'Alexandrie, et surtout allez vous- même à la Comédie des Champs Elysées à partir du 12 Février, du Mardi au Vendredi à 19 heures et le Dimanche à 16 h 30. Ne tardez pas à prendre vos places...Ce serait vraiment, vraiment, dommage de ne pas vous faire plaisir.

En cette Journée internationale de commémoration des victimes de l'Holocauste, la presse italienne constate avec effroi que les Italiens sont nombreux à se dire antisémites. Une réalité confirmée par les chiffres d'un récent sondage. 
Un sondage publié le 26 janvier, par le Corriere della Sera révèle en effet que "douze Italiens sur cent se disent antisémites". En fait, remarque l'éditorialiste de La Stampa Arrigo Levi, "les antisémites qui se disent tels sont aujourd'hui en Italie 45 % : ceux qui le sont par antijudaïsme religieux et culturel (10 %) ; ceux qui estiment que les Juifs sont "trop puissants et peu patriotes (11 %) ; ceux qui en ont après Israël en raison de son attitude envers les Palestiniens et la Shoah (12 %), et, enfin, ceux qui sont antisémites pour toutes ces raisons ensemble. Cash crisis threat to Auschwitz

It is a bitterly cold winter's day at one of the most notorious and harrowing places on Earth. Patches of ice crunch underfoot with every step, punctuating the silence which has long pervaded this former killing field.
This is Birkenau, the largest camp in the Auschwitz complex, where most of its 1.1 million victims - 90% of them Jews - were murdered.
But after nearly seven decades exposed to the elements, few of what were originally hundreds of structures remain standing, and those which have survived are gradually rotting away.
Unlike the smaller Auschwitz I - sturdy brick-built former Polish cavalry barracks expropriated by the Nazis - Birkenau (or Auschwitz II) - was erected in 1941 solely as a death camp, and was not built to last.
With every passing year the urgency to preserve what is left of the site grows, and while steps are being taken to do so, crucial conservation work is hampered by a shortage of funds. more>>
