Frida Kahlo: Portraits of an Icon at San Jose Museum of Art

SAN JOSE, CA.-The San Jose Museum of Art presents today Frida Kahlo: Portraits of an Icon, on view through March 22, 2009. Shedding light on the life and art of Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954), this exhibition features approximately fifty photographic portraits of the legendary Mexican artist. Drawn from the collection of Spencer Throckmorton, a specialist in Latin American photography, the exhibition includes works by several of the most renowned photographers of the twentieth century: Manuel Alvarez Bravo and Nickolas Muray. These preeminent photographers produced remarkable portraits of refined artistry and technique that exceed the boundaries documentary photography.

Nonetheless, some of the most revealing photographs in the exhibition were taken by her close friends and family, such as Guillermo Kahlo and Lucienne Bloch, who were also accomplished photographers. Overall, these portraits chronicle Kahlo from the onset of her artistic career until her death and portray her various roles as painter, patient, wife, daughter, lover, and friend. Many of the photographs offer an intimate glimpse of private moments in her bedroom, hospital room, studio, and garden. Other images reveal the artist’s carefully constructed self-image. Often dressed in pre-Columbian attire, Kahlo demonstrates a deep interest in her Mexican heritage while discretely concealing her physically deformed leg beneath her long flowing skirts. more>>

Very little is known about the second exodus of North Africa's Jewish community from Egypt. Fewer people know that a thriving Jewish/European community existed in Egypt until the middle of the twentieth century. With this in mind, Women’s Lens was created to inform and present a woman's voice to the Diaspora. I explore anti-Semitism, Israel, socio-economic issues and their effect on women worldwide. We also look at culture, not only our own, but the ones that have had a great effect on our traditions. Since, for a lot of us, French was our native tongue, many posts on Women's Lens are in that language. Inevitably, there will also be narratives peppered with some Arabic, Spanish, Ladino and any other language that may have enriched our lives.

" Dr. Mirrer has published widely on language, literature, medieval studies, and womens studies. Her most recent book is Women, Jews, and Muslims in the Texts of Reconquest Castile, a deconstruction of the medieval Castilian canon using contemporary theories of gender and race. She holds a double Ph.D. in Spanish and Humanities and an MA in Spanish from Stanford University, and she holds the Diploma in Linguistics from Cambridge University in England. In this presentation Dr. Mirrer discusses Judeo-Spanish history, the Spanish Inquisition as precursor to the Holocaust, and artistic and literary depictions that tie the themes together.

Family Ties & Political Structure in Pisa and Livorno

In his presentation of two documents pertaining to Jews in Pisa and Livorno, Bernard Cooperman discusses the link between family connections and the construction of a new formal Jewish community and explores the connection between family and business networks. Cooperman argues here that new communities in early modern Italy were often structured as merchant companies, and it was a family that was a base of trade networks. Family also became a method of joining the community, while at the same time families and individuals used membership in a community to legitimize a family. The presentation further explores interracial marriages and offspring of Sephardic Jews, role of women in the community and in wealth distribution. A larger overarching argument is that it was in the early modern period that the Jewish community was able to create formal structures.

BMCC Professor Debuts New Memoir - Joyce Zonana

Everybody has a story to tell. BMCC English Professor Joyce Zonana shares her personal life story in her recently-released book, Dream Homes: From Cairo to Katrina, an Exile's Journey, published by CUNY Feminist Press, 2008. Joyce Zonana earned her Ph.D. in English at the University of Pennsylvania. Before coming to BMCC in 2006, she taught for 15 years at the University of New Orleans, where she was also Director of Womens Studies. Several chapters from her yet-to-be-published memoir, Dream Home, have appeared in journals and books, including Meridians, International Sephardic Journal, Jewish Womens Literary Annual, and Becoming American: Personal Essays by First Generation Immigrant Women. Her scholarly articles, on feminist theory and 19th century British literature, have appeared in Hudson Review, Signs, Victorian Poetry, Tulsa Studies in Womens Literature, and Journal of Narrative Technique.
